“Walkin’ & Talkin’ To Myself”
Song by Ray Charles
A song without an agreed-upon title, “Walkin’ & Talkin’ To Myself” is, as far as anyone knows, among the earliest-known Ray Charles recordings. Done at home on a wire recorder in early 1948, RC Robinson (as Ray still called himself) recorded a few songs at the age of 17. One of these was “Walkin’ & Talkin’ To Myself”, a song released on a short-lived label called Rockin’ Records in December 1952. The B-side of that record, which was apparently available on both 45 and 78, was a song of equal provenance, “I’m Wonderin’ And Wonderin'”. (Apostrophes abounded on the record.)
“Walkin’ & Talkin’ To Myself” has also been released sporadically on cheapo quasi-bootleg albums of Ray’s early pre-Atlantic 78s. The song has been given alternate titles on some of these and some may have haphazard overdubs added. It has also been released on more carefully curated CD and MP3 compilations as well, and these are the recommended sources for “Walkin’ & Talkin’ To Myself” and all of Ray’s other recordings 1949-1951.
