“People”
Song by Ray Charles
The final song on Ray Charles’ 1967 album Listen is “People”. Our Genius attacks the complex vocal melodies with panache on “People” as the dense and dramatic music is led by a honking two-note riff from a low saxophone. Even further behind, but providing all the color in the instrumentation, is the lush orchestra. The best part of “People” is the way Ray adds a little grit or vocal tweak here and there, giving a much greater 3D feel to the simplistic lyrics which slip by almost unnoticed. In addition, towards the end “People” finds Ray continuing the thrilling, almost shrieking falsetto experiment he’d been indulging in previously on the LP.
