“Nothing Like A Hundred Miles”
Song by Ray Charles
Guest B.B. King enlivens “Nothing Like A Hundred Miles”, the leadoff song on Ray Charles’ fantastic 1988 LP Just Between Us. Amid B.B.’s clean-toned, wailing lines, Ray’s even tenor tells a tale of resolve and a picking up of the pieces from a failed relationship. James Taylor wrote “Nothing Like A Hundred Miles”, which means it has a gentle melody with subtly lovely touches. Most interestingly, maybe even more so than that irrepressible guitar, is the double-time percussion that suddenly emboldens each chorus. It’s hard to get this one out of your head; everyone just sounds so good on “Nothing Like A Hundred Miles”. A great opener for the album.
