“Making Believe”

Ray Charles sounds small and lonesome on “Making Believe”. From his classic 1962 LP Modern Sounds In Country And Western Music Volume 2, this formerly country song is done in a sympathetic style by Ray and a very simple orchestra. Just a few strings follow an easy, high melody line in the background while Ray trades lines with a pure-sounding choir and barely audible drums tap out the most basic of beats. The sentiment is pitifully hopeful and hopeless at the same time, as Ray’s great singing performance conveys. “Making Believe” was released as the B-side of the hit single “Busted” 1962.
