“I Can See Clearly Now”
Song by Ray Charles
A cover of Johnny Nash’s “I Can See Clearly Now” is a stupendous way to begin Ray Charles’ great 1977 album True To Life. Rousingly optimistic but tempered with a downbeat reticence, “I Can See Clearly Now” is robust on all sides. Ray is as soulful as ever on top of a funky rhythm sprouting thrilling trumpet blasts here and there. No wonder it was chosen as the A-side to a single in 1977, backed with the also-excellent but darker-hued “Anonymous Love”.
