“I Believe To My Soul”
Song by Ray Charles
One of Ray Charles’ finest and most famous moments, “I Believe To My Soul” is a haunting and dejected blues. Released on his then-final Atlantic single in 1959, “I Believe To My Soul” is distinguished by its sparse electric piano tinkling, the backing chorus of overdubbed Rays singing falsetto, and a single spoken line from a woman. If legend is to be believed, the line was spoken by a prostitute hired to visit the studio.
“I Believe To My Soul” is included on most Ray Charles compilations, including the 1961 collection The Genius Sings The Blues. And rightly so. It’s the Genius at his utter peak.
