“How Did You Feel The Morning After”
Song by Ray Charles
“How Did You Feel The Morning After” is a song from Ray Charles’ 2002 album Thanks For Bringing Love Around Again. It’s got a funky groove and is marked by its chorus, in which multiple overdubbed Ray voices all join together to impart the tune’s wisdom.
Unlike many of Ray’s other late-period songs, “How Did You Feel The Morning After” has a sound that recalls his classic eras: less electronica and more smooth horns, live drums, and a precise, snappy band. Then again there are modern elements, including his pitch-adjusting keyboard solo and that weird chorus of Rays. (Ray had multi-tracked his voice on “I Believe To My Soul” back in 1959, but all in falsetto so you might not notice it as much. “How Did You Feel The Morning After” multi-tracks Ray’s regular voice, making it less haunting than in 1959 but still an interesting touch.)
To hear “How Did You Feel The Morning After” you’ll have to track down a copy of Thanks For Bringing Love Around Again which was released on CD only, not vinyl. Brand-new copies are very easy to find for cheap, and it’s recommended. The final album released in Ray’s lifetime is excellent.
