“Don’t Set Me Free”
Song by Ray Charles
Sweaty and funky, “Don’t Set Me Free” is a rapid-fire R&B workout released on a Ray Charles single in 1963. Mary Ann Fisher, Raelet extraordinaire, deserves an artist credit on “Don’t Set Me Free”. Her anguished cries offset Ray’s own impatient whimperings, matching him word for word. Musically, the song is reminiscent of “Unchain My Heart”.
“Don’t Set Me Free” was only available on the 7″ single, with the even better “The Brightest Smile In Town” as its B-side. Such riches, and never even on an album. A live version of “Don’t Set Me Free” was added to the 1964 LP Live In Concert.
