“(All I Wanna Do Is) Lay Around And Love On You”
Song by Ray Charles
“(All I Wanna Do Is) Lay Around And Love On You” is a fun and funky song from Ray’s 1984 album Do I Ever Cross Your Mind. Easy and enjoyable, it’s marked by several overdubbed guitars of various descriptions, including a prominent one that sizzles with a distinctly country flavor. Ray’s keyboards, including an electric piano, are buried deep for most of the track but the music pops out of the speakers dynamically anyway.
The lyrics are pure country in the way they address a small but heartfelt aspect of every day life. In this case, the singer has awoken groggily to go to work and quickly realizes he’d rather stay in bed with his woman. So that’s what he does, the randy rascal.
The man gets more and more worked up as the morning unfolds (“we’re gonna try everything in the book!” he promises gleefully). Ray as you can imagine has a grand old time in this role.
“(All I Wanna Do Is) Lay Around And Love On You” is big and busy, with a fat sound and a confident, persistent rhythm. It’s fun because the band sounds like they’re enjoying themselves as much as Ray is enjoying telling his sexy story.
