“3/4 Time”
Song by Ray Charles
The slyly comical country tune “3/4 Time” is the very first song on Ray Charles’ 1983 LP Wish You Were Here Tonight – and, as such, the first new thing that Ray LP buyers had heard since 1980’s era-closing record Brother Ray Is At It Again.
“3/4 Time” is indeed in 3/4 time and is driven along, besides Ray and his piano, by a plucky mandolin. Our hero is in a playful mood as he describes his relaxing life lived in 3/4 time, whatever that means. Towards the end, after stating his intent to find a woman who likes to make love in waltz time, he starts pondering other possibilities just in case: “6/4? How about 12/8?”
As the first new Ray in quite a while, “3/4 Time” alerted the public that Brother Ray was back in a slightly country-ish mood – as well as playful, tuneful, and masterful as ever.
